A teenager took his own life after a disturbing series of conversations with ChatGPT.

The boy’s parents are suing OpenAI, claiming their son had no prior mental health diagnoses and that the chatbot failed in the most critical way possible: it didn’t recognize a crisis when it saw one.

And only now—after the lawsuit, after the loss—has OpenAI announced new safety protocols.

Here’s what they’re doing differently:

  • Emergency flagging: If ChatGPT detects phrases that suggest crisis thinking—like a user saying they feel “invincible” after not sleeping for days. It can now pause the conversation and direct users to immediate support resources.

  • Conversation limits: New rules are in place to end interactions that veer into dangerous emotional territory.

  • Parental controls: Parents of younger users can now view chat history and monitor how their child is using the tool.

  • Professional intervention: OpenAI says it’s working toward connecting users in distress with real, licensed mental health professionals. (It’s not live yet, but it’s coming.)

These are good changes. But they are also late.

And they raise a hard truth:

We are letting kids have private conversations with machines we don’t fully understand.

AI doesn’t sleep.

It doesn’t forget.

And unlike friends or family, it never gets tired of listening.
